On March 20, China Meteorological Administration (CMA) hosted a video meeting to launch the smart weather prediction demonstration project for Beijing Winter Olympic Games 2022 (hereafter referred to as the project). By means of carrying out the project during the trial contest of this event in 2021 and the official games session, it will provide potent scientific support for services of this event, and meet the demand for refined weather prediction of one hundred meter scale and minute scale. Mr. Yu Rucong, Deputy Administrator of CMA, Mr. Ding Yihui, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering attended the meeting.

It is informed that the contents of the project will mainly touch upon providing ground meteorological factor forecasting products which can be directly referred to by the forecasters, engage all sectors and relevant units, and pool wisdom of the whole sector to serve the smooth operation of this sports event. Implementing this project will further promote the development of refined weather prediction technology, elevate the modernization level, and deepen its application in fields like meteorological disaster preparedness.

CMA has established special organizational institution to push forward the project, set up the management team, guiding expert team, and 4 featured working groups.

According to the meeting, relevant departments will fully recognize the severe challenge faced by the services for this event, accelerate scientific innovation, fully integrate and apply the development results of meteorological prediction modernization in recent years, organize teams to conduct research into climatic features in winter and complex topographic conditions impact, provide refined monitoring, accurate forecasting and elaborate services, reinforce management and coordination, summarize exchanges experience and results, and guarantee the smooth operation of the project.
